Plant of the Day: Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum)

Pollinator plant of the day: Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum). Bees and butterflies are so crazy for this plant that is is our most-video’ed! Even hummingbirds are attracted to it. Veronicastrum grows 4 to 7 ft tall and has a spread of 2 to 4 ft. A wildflower, it grows in average, well-drained soil with medium to wet conditions. It blooms June to August and is deer-resistant.

Not sure why this native plant is rare and threatened in Massachusetts, it is one of our favorites on the farm. We replant a little each year, as it seems to be more of a two-year plant than a true perennial under our growing conditions.
